One of the added benefits of buying an Olympus digital camera is that it also comes with Camedia Master, a software program that allows you to do all kinds of things with your images after you've saved them to your computer. It's easy to use and works with both PC and Mac computers.

With the Camedia Master software, you can create index pages for file reference purposes, create postcards to send to family, friends or business clients, and create photo albums and custom calendars. When creating calendars, you can choose from many different design templates, make a calendar for every month, and even make 12-month calendar on a single page.

This lesson demonstrates step-by-step just how fast and easy it is to make custom calendars.

For this lesson, we decided to create a calendar using one of the result shots from another lesson on this site. To see how this image was photographed, check out the lesson in the Portrait section entitled, Taking professional Portraits Of Your Child At Home.

    CREATING A CALENDAR
Once you've loaded the Camedia Master software onto your computer, start up the program and choose CALENDAR from the main menu (figure 1).

This will bring up the Calendar Print window. First, click the BROWSE… button to locate the folder of images you want to use for your calendar. Once you've selected the desired folder, thumbnails of the images will appear in the left-hand column of the window (figure 2).

Before you add an image to the template, first determine how the calendar is going to look. Under ORIENTATION, at the top of the right-hand column of the window, choose either PORTRAIT or LANDSCAPE, depending on the orientation of the photo you are going to use. Clicking on either option will set the orientation in the center layout accordingly.

Under TEMPLATES, you can choose from one of five templates: One Month, Two Months, Three Months, Six Months, and One Year (figure 3).

Next, use the scroll bar to choose a calendar layout. Once you've found one you want to use, click on it to bring it up in the central layout window.

Finally, select a Start Year and Month for the calendar. Keep in mind that the Camedia program will set these fields to the current year and month. Just remember that if it's February and you want to make a One Year calendar starting with January, you'll need to adjust the Month setting (figure 4).

Once you've determined how your calendar is going to look, select the thumbnail of the image you wish to use and either click the ADD button at the bottom of the left-hand column, or simply drag the thumbnail onto the calendar layout. You will then see the larger version of the image appear in your layout (figure 5).

After all the settings in the Calendar Print window have been adjusted, press the PRINT button at the lower right-hand section of the window to pull up your printer dialog box (figure 6).

NOTE: You will not be able to save any of the Calendar Templates to your hard drive, so be sure to print as many as you will need.

When the Print Dialog box appears, first select the printer you wish to use (figure 7).

Then choose the type of paper you are going to use from the PRINT SETTINGS menu. NOTE: The PRINT SETTINGS menu may be grouped with other print options within a drop down bar. Here, we chose PREMIUM SEMIGLOSS PHOTO PAPER (figure 8).

Under the MODE field, select the ADVANCED SETTINGS button and choose the level of PRINT QUALITY you wish to apply to the calendar. Here, we chose BEST PHOTO (figure 9).

When everything is dialed in with the print dialog box, check to see that the printer is on, connected to your computer and has the correct paper loaded. Select Print in the lower right-hand corner of the window and after a few moments, you will be holding your new custom calendar in your hand (figures 10 & 11).

You may want to print up several copies to send to friends and family members, but remember to keep at least one for yourself and post it where you'll enjoy it most (figure 12).

Keep in mind that there are many other things you can do with your images using the Camedia Master software, so take some time to explore the program once you get it loaded.
